According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, there will be an estimated 53,000 people in the US will be diagnosed with oral cancer this year, of which, only 57% will survive in the next 5 years. It’s highly recommended that you get an oral cancer screening during your dental visit, as early detection can really improve your chance for a cure.

During the exam, your dentist will look for abnormal sores and patches in your mouth. He will also palpate your neck and throat for any lumps. If an abnormality is detected, your dentist will request for a biopsy to determine if the sore is cancerous or not.

Some people are at high risk for oral cancer, including:

  1. Those who use tobacco.
  2. Those who drink a lot of alcohol regularly.
  3. Those who have been diagnosed with oral cancer in the past.
  4. Those who are always outdoors, spending a lot of time in the sun.
  5. Those who have acquired some types of HPV.
  6. Those who chew betel.
